Goa meat traders challenge cattle trade restrictions in High Court

The Bombay High Court on Wednesday issued notice to the central and the Maharashtra governments over a petition filed by meat traders challenging the newly- introduced restrictions on cattle trade.

Quraishi's Meat Traders' Association of Goa challenged in the Goa bench of the high court the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Regulation of Livestock Markets) Rules, 2017, contending that they violate the right to carry on trade and the freedom of religion under the Constitution.

Among other things, the association challenged rule 22 which provides that purchaser of cattle shall not sacrifice the animal for any religious purpose.

The Goa Animal Preservation Act, 1995 permits slaughter of bovines subject to compliance of certain conditions, and the Union government has no powers to make rules on matters pertaining to protection and preservation of livestock, the petition said.

At least 3 people injured in San Francisco shooting

At least three people were injured, including the suspected gunman, in a shooting on Wednesday at a United Parcel Service facility in San Francisco, local media reported.

San Francisco police on Twitter confirmed a shooting had taken place and advised people to avoid the area.

The suspect was hospitalized in police custody, local media reported.

Victims were taken to the Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, spokesman Brent Andrew said. He said he could not say how many patients were taken to the hospital or give their conditions.

It was not immediately clear if anyone had died.

The shooting occurred in the area of a United Parcel Service facility, CBS San Francisco and other local media outlets reported, citing authorities. A San Francisco police representative could not immediately be reached for comment.

Petrol pump dealers withdraw strike against daily revision of fuel prices

Petrol pump owners on Wednesday called off a proposed strike after oil minister Dharmendra Pradhan assured them that the revised price of petrol and diesel will kick in at 6am every day instead of at midnight as proposed earlier.

The new system is set to take off on Friday.

Fuel pump owners will be told of the revised rate every day at 8pm but the rate will only be applicable from 6am the next day. This will allow fuel pumps time to feed their machines with the new rate.
A midnight revision, said dealers, would have meant shutting their pumps for a few hours everyday to reflect the revised price, which could have made matters difficult at fuel outlets on highways that remain open through the night.

A majority of the nearly 58,000 petrol pumps in India are owned and operated by dealers. And 60-70% of these pumps are on highways, said the All India Petroleum Dealers Association.
"There were some apprehensions that dealers had about the daily revision of petrol and diesel prices. But now it has been resolved," said oil minister Dharmendra Pradhan after a two-and-a-half-hour meeting in New Delhi on Wednesday.

Indian Oil Corporation said that 87 control rooms will be set up across the country to extend technical help to dealers. The state-run company said the daily price revisions will be communicated through screens at petrol pumps, toll free numbers and mobile apps.

ICC Champions Trophy: Pakistan stun England, enter final for the first time

Pakistan delivered an inspired all-round performance to rout a ragged England team by eight wickets in a one-sided Champions Trophy semi-final on Wednesday. (England vs Pakistan: MATCH BLOG)
Pakistan bowled and fielded tightly to restrict the hosts to a paltry total of 211 all out and the lowest-ranked team in the tournament knocked off the runs in style with a massive 12.5 overs to spare.

(England vs Pakistan: SCORECARD)

It was a major disappointment for England, who won all three group matches in their bid to claim a first global 50-over title and had beaten Pakistan in 12 of their last 14 one-day internationals.

They collapsed, however, on a sluggish pitch from 128 for two in sunny conditions which normally favour batsmen and the bowlers failed to repair the damage as Fakhar Zaman and Azhar Ali shared a stand of 118 to lead Pakistan to their target.

"One thing we didn't do was adapt to conditions, which I thought Pakistan did extremely well," England captain Eoin Morgan said.

"Full credit to them, they outplayed us on this wicket. 211 wasn't a good score. 250/270 would have been."
Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed won the toss and England openers Alex Hales and Jonny Bairstow, replacing the out-of-form Jason Roy, made a solid enough start.

Hitting boundaries proved difficult, however, and a clearly frustrated Hales, on 13, spooned Rumman Raees to cover with a loose drive.

Bairstow, dropped twice, accumulated 43 runs through good shot placement and quick running between the wickets before he pulled seamer Hasan Ali to Mohammad Hafeez at deep square leg.

Joe Root and Morgan continued to score at about five runs an over but Root, on 46, nicked leg-spinner Shadab Khan to wicketkeeper Sarfraz and Morgan (33) aimed an expansive drive at the lively Hasan and gave Sarfraz another catch to leave England in trouble at 141 for four.

Jos Buttler (4), Moeen Ali (11) and Adil Rashid (7) fell quickly and Ben Stokes, one of the most destructive batsmen in the world, failed to hit a boundary in a scratchy 34 as the Pakistan bowlers dominated.

Fakhar hit Mark Wood for the first six of the match in the opening over of Pakistan's innings and he and Azhar played some delightful strokes in a fluent partnership.

Fakhar reached his 50 off 49 balls before being stumped by Buttler off Rashid for 57 but Azhar and Babar Azam calmly continued to milk runs all around the ground as England's bowlers ran out of ideas.

Azhar, on 76, dragged a delivery from Jake Ball on to his stumps before Babar (38 not out) and Hafeez (31 not out) guided Pakistan home.

"Credit goes to the bowlers and the batters who finished it very well," Sarfraz said. "We adapted to the conditions, we knew if we restricted them we could easily chase it down.
"Every game is a knockout game and I told my boys to play their game and not worry about the result."

Darjeeling crisis takes new turn, GNLF snaps ties with TMC

The political crisis in the Darjeeling hills took a new turn today with the GNLF breaking its alliance with the TMC after having joined hands with agitation spearhead GJM, saying the party has been fighting for Gorkhaland since its inception.

Emboldened by the Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) aligning with his party, Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) chief Bimal Gurung threatened to intensify the movement for a separate Gorkhaland even as the indefinite shutdown in the government and the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) offices entered its third day.

The GNLF, formed by the late firebrand leader Subhash Ghisingh, had led a violent movement for Gorkhaland in the eighties, following which the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council (DGHC) was formed.

Gurung broke away from the GNLF and formed the GJM in 2007 and subsequently emerged as the dominant force in the hills.

"The GNLF, since its inception in the eighties under the leadership Subhash Ghisingh, has been fighting for Gorkhaland. Our ultimate goal is to achieve a separate state of Gorkhaland," Neraaj Zimba, spokesperson of the GNLF, told PTI.

He said the alliance with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) was never a political or ideological one, but an electoral tie-up.

The TMC is trying to deflect attention from the real demand of Gorkhaland through "doles and charity", Zimba said.

No untoward incident was reported from Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Kurseong and Mirik during the day and despite the bandh call, the state government offices remained open.

Vehicles plied as the police remained on high alert and patrolled the streets.

Banks and most ATMs were closed, but shops and markets were open.

Most of the tourists have left the hills and hotels were empty. Hotel owners told the tourists, who still remained, that they could stay, but at their own risk.

GJM workers gathered in front of the food and supply office in Kurseong but left following police intervention.
The GJM, along with other hill parties, took out rallies in several areas of the hills demanding Gorkhaland.

Police pickets and barricades were placed in front of the government and the GTA offices, in which the GJM is enforcing an indefinite shutdown which entered its third day today, and at various entry exit points of the hills.

The Rapid Action Force (RAF) and a sizeable number of women police personnel were also deployed.

The Centre had yesterday despatched 600 paramilitary personnel to assist the West Bengal government restore normalcy in the violence-hit area.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met Governor K N Tripathi in Kolkata and briefed him about the situation in the hills.

The state government has removed Donbosco Lepcha, the secretary of the GTA, and appointed C Murugan as the new secretary, a notification issued by the Personnel and Administrative Reforms and e-Governance Department, yesterday, said.

The state government had recently replaced GTA Principal Secretary Ravi Inder Singh and brought in Barun Ray.

Justifying his party's stand to break its alliance with the TMC, Zimba said, "The Gorkhas were ditched by successive state governments. We now feel that the atmosphere in the hills is fully conducive for the creation of a separate state.

"The GJM is also an ally of the NDA, which is in power at the Centre."

He said, "It is true that we have differences among the players in the hills, but for the sake of the people we have decided to keep aside our differences and fight for Gorkhaland."

Gurung, who threatened to intensify the movement for Gorkhaland, asked tourists not to visit the hill station as they might be inconvenienced.

"I will not welcome the tourists because they may face problems. There will be agitation, bandh in the hills...
"Indefinite bandh has been called in the government and the GTA offices. The movement for Gorkhaland will be intensified," he said.

Gurung said that he will shortly resign from the post of the GTA chief executive but the GJM MLAs and the municipal councillors will not step down.

State Tourism minister Gautam Deb slammed Gurung for his statement.

"Darjeeling is not anybody's property. He should not make such utterances. None is above the law," he said.
Senior GNLF leader N B Chetri earlier said, "Why so many questions are raised over joining hands with the GJM? The TMC on several occasions had joined hands with the BJP and the Congress. In politics such things do happen."

He said, "We won't allow an opportunist political party like the TMC to benefit from the infightig among various parties in the hills."

PM Modi to ride Kochi Metro, 'Metro man' Shreedharan excluded from dais

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will on Saturday travel on a Kochi metro rain when he inaugurates Kerala's first metro, it was announced on Wednesday. But 'Metro man' E. Sreedharan has not been given a seat on the dais.

In the first 25-km phase, trains will run for 13 km between Palarivattom and Aluva. Work is on the remaining section.

Those on the dais will be Modi, Governor P. Sathasivam, Information and Broadcasting Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

Elias George, the Managing Director of Kochi Metro Rail Corp, told the media that ' the list of invitees to the dais was prepared and sent to the Prime Minister's Office. The final list is made by the PMO. We have no role in this.'

Reacting to the exclusion of Sreedharan from the dais, P.T. Thomas said: 'This shows the arrogance of the BJP.

'When the foundation stone for Kochi Metro was laid by then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, none was left out from the dais. This is Kerala's dream project and key people behind this are now asked to sit in the audience. This is totally unfair.'

MHA launches Twitter handle 'Bharat Ke Veer' to help provide funds to families of slain paramilitary soldiers

The Ministry of Home Affairs on Wednesday, June 14, launched a Twitter handle @BharatKeVeer to gather funds to help families of paramilitary soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty.

'Bharat Ke Veer' — an initiative by the MHA — will provide information on how to support soldiers who died while fighting against extremists or terrorists.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh had launched the app and website with Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar on April 9. The initiative provides details of deceased CRPF soldiers with their name, age, the name of the dependent family members and the incident where the soldiers made the supreme sacrifice.
Akshay Kumar had come up with this idea nearly three months before the launch of the website and app. He had discussed the idea with MHA and initiated the plan with a team of experts.

Donors can pay any amount up to Rs 15 lakh through debit or credit card or net banking. Citizens can visit the website or app and make monetary donations, which will be deposited directly in the bank account of the deceased soldier's family.

Akshay Kumar had thanked the Home Ministry for working towards launching the portal, which was designed in a record time of just two and a half months. "This will act as a support to the families of the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the nation and act as a platform for those who want to contribute to the families of the bravehearts, but are not aware of the channel," the actor had said at the launch of the portal in April.

Home Minister Singh and Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi had also thanked the Bollywood actor for coming up with the idea of the portal. "Akshay Kumar is a hero for people, but Akshay Kumar's real heroes are the soldiers of paramilitary forces," Singh had said in April.

Champions Trophy: Can't take 'dangerous' Bangladesh side for granted, says Virat Kohli

On the eve of the high-octane ICC Champions Trophy semi-final against Bangladesh at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground here on Thursday (June 15), India skipper Virat Kohli hinted at retaining the same playing XI which trounced South Africa in their final Group B game at The Oval on Sunday.

In the run-up to the ICC Champions Trophy, India thrashed Bangladesh by 240 runs in a warm-up match, thanks to three-wicket hauls from the pace duo of Umesh Yadav and Bhuvneshwar Kumar but Kohli on Wednesday backed off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin's inclusion in the playing XI.

'We gave a lot of people chances in the practice games and everyone bowled well in that game but that does not mean that you will necessarily play against that particular opposition. Ashwin was brilliant in the last game, I don't see any good reason to change that,' Kohli told reporters here.

'The team played really well, it was a complete performance and I certainly don't feel that there is any need to change.'
Asked whether past results will boost the morale of the men-in-blue in the high pressure game, Kohli quickly pointed out that the team's mindset does not change from game to game.

'We are not going to go with what past results have done going into a big game like this. We are going to treat it like how we treated the last game and our mindset does not differ,' he said.

'We have been in these kinds of games quite a few times before but there are no guarantees in this sport. We have seen during the league stages itself that a lot of teams have surprised the opposition.'

'We are not, certainly not, taking anything for granted. We will use whatever momentum we have gained in the tournament to execute in the match,' he added.

Terming Bangladesh a 'very dangerous' side, the 28-year-old Kohli credited the opposition with rising to the challenge in big matches.

Bangladesh outplayed New Zealand in their final Group A tie to qualify for the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy, their first appearance in the last-four stage of any major ICC tournament.

'It's no surprise that they are doing really well and have improved their cricket. Credit to their set-up and the kind of players who are taking more responsibility.'

'They are a very dangerous side on their day. No one can take their opposition for granted and Bangladesh have taken huge strides,' Kohli said.

Asked whether the lack of exposure to the lower order batting will affect the side in case of a crisis situation, Kohli said: 'No, that's not a concern, obviously as a batsman you want to finish off games.

Everyone has batted well in the practice games and we know Kedar (Jadhav) and Hardik (Pandya) are playing really well at the moment.'

'So we are not bothered at all. Rather they are looking for an opportunity, if the team is in a sort of trouble, I am sure those two guys are going to step up along with Jadeja (Ravindra) and Ashwin.'
Kohli also congratulated veteran batsman Yuvraj Singh, who will play his 300th One-day International (ODI) on Thursday and hoped that the southpaw will contribute in a special way in the big match.
'I congratulate him and wish him all the very best and hopefully he can play a lot more for us and get in those match-winning performances all over again and I hope tomorrow is a special one for him.'
'Yuvraj's contribution to Indian cricket has been outstanding. He has been a total match winner for India, won us so many big tournaments and series and this is just a testimony to the kind of talent he possess,' he added.

Shameful! Bangladeshi fan insults tricolour ahead of India-Bangladesh semi-final match in CT 17

Ahead of the India-Bangladesh clash in the semi-finals of the ongoing Champions Trophy an over enthusiastic Bangladeshi fan has insulted the Indian National Flag on social media.

The fan has posted a photoshopped image on Twitter by draping Indian tricolour around a dog which is being attacked by a tiger -- signified as Bangladesh.

The Bangladeshi fans call their national side as 'Tigers', in fact Bangladesh cricket team's official Facebook page goes by the name of 'Bangladesh Cricket: The Tigers'.

The literal translation of what's written with the image is: 'It is going to be a great match.'
Defending Champions India will be locking horns with Bangladesh in the semi-finals on Thursday (June 15).

It is not the first ocassion when Bangladeshi fans have crossed the limit of sportsmanship and disrespected India.

Earlier last year, a picture of Bangladesh's right-arm pacer Taskin Ahmed carrying the severed head of the Indian limited-overs captain MS Dhoni had gone viral over social media.

The picture was uploaded on micro-blogging site Twitter after Bangladesh stunned Pakistan to set up a summit clash with the Men in Blue in the Asia Cup 2016.

Earlier in 2015 when India struggled to cope with pacer Mustafizur Rahman, a Bangladesh newspaper had published a picture of half-shaved heads of the Indian players, in order to show the after-effects of Mustafizur's 'cutters'.

A Bangla newspaper 'Prothom Alo', in its Monday edition (Weekly humour magazine - 'Rosh Alo'), published a distasteful advertisement which left Indian fans fuming.

Dhoni-led India lost the 3-match ODI series 1-2 at Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur with young left-arm paceman Mustafizur Rahman being the wrecker-in-chief of the visitors' batting line-up. The 19-year-old Mustafizur captured a world record 13 wickets in 3 games.

It is known fact that the Bangladeshis treat cricket as more than a game. If cricket is religion in India, it's beyond that in Bangladesh. It's a getaway from all the worries of poverty, unemployment and other teething issues.

But fans shouldn't cross their limits when it comes to respecting other team's sentiments. Bangladesh fans, perhaps, still have a long way to learn it.
